Living On The Prairie Song

Living On The Prairie Song

Smarter's Favorite Songs of 2019

2019 was one for the record books. New acts like King Princess, Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X hit the airwaves and dominated the cultural zeitgeist. It's almost bizarre to remember how many other zeitgeisty artists like Drake, Madonna and The Raconteurs released albums this year.

We could've sworn Tool had a reunion. And Vampire Weekend got back together, too. But all we can remember about the last few months is that we couldn't escape "Old Town Road" and Lizzo is in charge of everything now. Before another year comes to a close, let's look back at the best music to come out of 2019.

Channel Tres - "Sexy Black Timberlake"

Channel Tres is quickly evolving into one of the most prolific names in dance music. After steadily releasing songs with syrupy vocals and hip-house beats for two years, "Sexy Black Timberlake" is his best tease for what's still to come.

Photo Courtesy: Lisa Lake/Roc Nation/Getty Images

"Sexy Black Timberlake" is the first single from Black Moses, his latest EP. While fans await his debut album, early adopters can still catch him on tour in smaller venues before he starts selling out stadiums. Trust us on this one — Channel Tres' SoCal sensuality and Barry-White-on-Xanax vocals are going to please many a dance floor in 2020.

Rosalía & J Balvin featuring El Guincho - "Con Altura"

Sorry, Lil Nas X, but the Song of the Summer wasn't your chart-topping "Old Town Road." No summer jam gave us '90s reggaeton throwback vibes at a 30,000-foot altitude quite like "Con Altura." We're in a post-"Despacito" world, and Latin and Spanish music have finally found a much larger fanbase. El Guincho has been making incredible dance music since 2007's Alegranza, so it's all the more exciting to see these three take over the world after all this time.

You only have to check out the video's 1.1 billion views on YouTube to recognize how much of a following these three have thanks to their massive hit. El Guincho, Rosalía and J Balvin have earned their way into heavy rotation at every beach party's playlist for years to come.

FKA Twigs - "Cellophane"

It was only April, but FKA Twigs released the best ballad of the year with "Cellophane," the first single from her second studio album Magdalene. It's heavy on the melodrama, and you can hear her guttural pain with each crescendo, but there's a hint of irony wrapped up in the song.

The song appears to be about her relationship with Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson. Carrying the emotional weight of the relationship while battling the public's far-from-positive approval of their love appears to have soured what could have been. But we wouldn't worry about FKA Twigs —she'll find something else to store in plastic wrap soon enough.

Lizzo featuring Missy Elliott - "Tempo"

Lizzo has had an explosive year, to say the least. The pop star made a major splash in 2019 with the release of her debut album Cuz I Love You. Out of all of her releases to hit it big on the radio, no song gets the dance floor moving like "Tempo," her collaboration with Missy Elliott.

It gives Lizzo the chance to spit playful bars to her next conquest, but if they weren't sold yet, she offers a flute solo at the end to seal the deal. And let's be real — if an elevator released music and said it was "featuring Missy Elliott," we'd be in that elevator allllll day.

Perfume Genius - "Eye in the Wall"

Perfume Genius' Mike Hadreas sings several songs about his relationship with his body. On 2017's No Shape, he gorgeously examined his gender confusion and challenges living with Crohn's disease. "Eye in the Wall," his collaboration with Seattle-based choreographer Kate Wallich, sees Hadreas giving in to his body's desire to move.

The nine-minute psychedelic rush takes him outside of the confines of his body and brings all of us with him onto a cosmic dance floor eons away. It's a beautiful, trippy opus that begs you to explore your own internal rhythms.

Tyler, the Creator - "What's Good"

Tyler, the Creator has a very clear message for his enemies on "What's Good" — bring it. His latest album Igor was a creative blend of rap and R&B that claimed the top spot on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart. "What's Good" is his most aggressive and dizzying diss track that quickly jumps from buzzing beats to synthesized and smooth R&B.

As each verse gets more intense, relaxing '70s synths are used as a distraction to cool you down before hitting you with another verse. After comparing himself to a god, a vampire and a crocodile with an eye for Steve Irwin, we're left speechless, which makes the soft piano outro feel all the more unsettling.

James Blake - "Assume Form"

The title track from Blake's fourth studio album is a delicate commitment to keep himself from giving in to depression. In the last year, the musician publicly acknowledged he sought treatment for having suicidal thoughts.

It was a powerful confession from the musician who wanted to use his story to help remove the stigma surrounding mental illness. "Assume Form" is a beautiful piano-and-string-fueled breakthrough moment for Blake and a gentle reminder for all of us to live more in the moment.

Lana Del Rey - "The greatest"

"The greatest" is like the last item you pack in the car before driving off into the sunset. It's also a cry to escape from times when an entire generation wasn't completely burned out. Or when Los Angeles wasn't literally up in flames. Together with producer Jack Antonoff, Lana Del Rey created the perfect song for the existential crisis all of us had at some point in 2019.

She calls for simpler times, like 1970s L.A.'s Laurel Canyon when it was frequented by bands like The Doors and The Mamas and The Papas. Hell, she'd even settle to go back to the rock resurgence of the late 2000s in New York City. Like the cover art for her 2019 album Norman F------ Rockwell!, "The greatest" reaches out for our hand so we can watch the end of the world together.

Australian Outdoor Living Pools

Australian Outdoor Living Pools

We've all wanted a concrete or fibreglass swimming pool in our backyard at one time or another.

Installing a swimming pool is a big decision! There's a lot to think about: location, size, shape, filter-type, heating… the list goes on! There's also one major decision you'll need to make straight away: whether to choose a concrete pool or a fibreglass pool.

There are several things to think about when you're deciding on whether to install a concrete or fibreglass pool:

  • The size and shape of your backyard area
  • The style of your home
  • Your budget

Scroll down to find out how these things can affect your decision. If you'd like more information, feel free to book a free measure and quote to speak with one of our friendly consultants.

How to choose a swimming pool that's right for your backyard - We've all wanted a swimming pool in our backyard at one time or another, Australian Outdoor Living.
Choose a swimming pool that fits with the aesthetic of your home.

The size and shape of your block can determine whether you install a concrete or fibreglass pool

When choosing a swimming pool for your yard, you need to consider the surrounds. Where your swimming pool is located can change the entire layout, design and feel of your property.

Consider how much space you have to work with, and how you want the finished product to complement that space. For example, if your yard is on the smaller side, you probably don't want to get the largest swimming pool in the range.

Do you want space for the kids to play on the lawn? Do you want an area in which to relax and enjoy the sunshine? You need to think about what you want to get out of your backyard before choosing a swimming pool.

Fibreglass swimming pools come in pre-determined shapes and sizes. Aside from being able to choose between a different size for each shape, you don't have a lot of flexibility. This is totally fine, but if your yard is an odd shape or if it has other features, it can become a problem.

Concrete pools are custom-designed to suit the space around them, making them perfect for backyards of any size and shape.

You need to think about what you want to get out of your backyard before you install a swimming pool.

Do you have a small backyard?

Increasingly, larger homes are being built on smaller blocks. This means the space available is more compressed than ever. Luckily there are plenty of ways to incorporate a swimming pool into a smaller backyard.

Round or oval-shaped swimming pools are a great way to add more space. Taking this route would mean you're sacrificing swimming space, but it's worth it for some extra room in your yard.

Australian Outdoor Living offers a range of round and oval-shaped fibreglass pool shells, perfect for this exact situation.

A round or oval-shaped swimming pool can make your pool area seem bigger than it actually is.

What about a large backyard?

The more spacious your backyard is, the more options you'll have when it comes to choosing a swimming pool. Space isn't usually an issue in larger backyards, so you'll be able play around with some different design ideas.

If you want your pool to really stand out, you can even choose an atypical design. A concrete pool can be designed in any shape or size, making it perfect option for a large backyard. Pair that with a tile pattern that's different to your home, and you've got a well-defined pool area that is an entirely separate part of your yard.

The possibilities are endless, especially if you're lucky enough to have a bit more space to play with.

What about the budget?

When you're comparing concrete and fibreglass pools, your budget will inevitably come into it.

A fibreglass pool is a pre-made shell that gets put in the ground, making it the cheaper option. It doesn't require an in-depth design – our installers will simply dig the hole and install the pool.

Concrete swimming pools are custom-designed according to each customer's needs, so they're usually more expensive than fibreglass pools.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter whether you end up getting a concrete or fibreglass pool. You'll still have made an investment in something that, over time, will increase the value of your home and provide hours of fun for your family.

Don't Throw Away Your Old TV, Give It Away Instead

CC0/StockSnap/Pixabay

If your TV has developed mechanical faults or is way past its heyday, it might be time to dispose of it. Perhaps you have bought a new TV, boasting the latest technology features. Getting rid of your old TV set will create space for the new piece of entertainment technology in your house. A modern TV makes events such as watching the football game with friends much more enjoyable.

While you might be tempted to just place your old TV in the garbage, disposing of your TV is not so easy. You have to take into account the laws around the disposal of electronic waste. In addition, you might be able to find a second home for your unwanted TV set. As a result, giving away your TV might be the best way of getting rid of it.

Why Throwing Your TV Away Could Be Illegal

The first major reason you cannot just throw away your old television is that it's probably illegal, though this depends on your state. Television sets, like many other electronics gadgets, contain potentially harmful toxins. This makes their safe disposal a matter of public safety. TV sets contain lead, copper, mercury, cadmium, and other hazardous materials.

As a result of the toxic nature of the materials used in TV manufacturing, many states now have laws governing their proper disposal. For example, the state of Hawaii covers this in its Electronic Device and Television Recycling Law. Likewise, Vermont has the Vermont E-Cycles statute that provides for the recycling of electronic equipment. Such laws across the country generally prohibit dumping of TVs as well as computers and other electronic equipment.

TV Disposal Costs Money

The proper disposal of your old TV unit can cost you upwards of $100, possibly more. This is because you have to hand over the TV to a manufacturer or other electronics disposal company. These companies have programs in place to process old electronics. Materials such as copper and metals will be melted and reused in the manufacture of other goods. Other materials such as glass will be separated from metals and reused for other purposes. However, this process is costly. For the end user, the annoying part is that disposing of your TV in this way will cost you, sometimes, just as much as buying a brand new TV. This is another good reason to give the TV away whenever possible.

Giving Your TV Away to Goodwill or Salvation Army

Your first option for giving the TV away is to donate it, if possible, to a local charity store. For example, in the past, organizations such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army have run programs where TVs could be donated. They would then gift these TVs to local families who wanted a TV but were too poor to afford one.

Given the new laws on the disposal of electronics, charity organizations might refuse electronics items that are too old. This is to avoid the disposal costs if they are unable to give the item away themselves. However, you should inquire with the charity organizations in your local area to see if the TV is a fit for them.

Giving Your TV Away As a Free Giveaway on Craigslist

In case you are unable to give the TV away to a charity organization, you can often sell off the TV on Craigslist or other online marketplaces. Even better, list the item as a free giveaway. Craigslist gives you access to a wide audience of people in your town. Chances are, the TV might be a great find for a young person in your area who wants one but cannot afford the latest models. When listing your item, make it clear that the recipient will need to come pick up the item from your house, that way you don't have to pay the shipping to send the TV to them.

Giving Your TV Away to a Neighbor or Organizing a Yard-Sale

A final option for giving your TV away is to give it to a neighbor or organize a yard sale. With a yard sale, you invite your neighbors and other local people to come to your house on a set date. You can often sell off unwanted items such as old furniture, TVs, washing machines and many others. Be aware, though, that with a yard sale you will likely sell many things below market value. This is an issue if you plan to sell valuable items. However, if you have an unwanted old TV, this is a good way to get it a new home without costing you money for disposal.

Gerrards Cross is a town and civil parish in south Buckinghamshire, England, separated from the London Borough of Hillingdon at Harefield by Denham, south of Chalfont St Peter and north bordering villages of Fulmer, Hedgerley, Iver Heath and Stoke Poges. It spans foothills of the Chiltern Hills and land on the right bank of the River Misbourne. It is 19.3 miles (31.1 km) west-north-west of Charing Cross, central London. Bulstrode Park Camp was an Iron Age fortified encampment.

The town has a railway station on the Chiltern Main Line with services to London, and the M40 motorway runs beside woodland on its southern boundary.

In 2014, a major national surveying company named Gerrards Cross as the most sought-after and expensive commuter town or village in their London Hot 100 report, with an average sale price of £1,000,000.[2]

History [edit]

The town name is new compared with the great bulk of English towns. Gerrards Cross did not exist in any formal sense until 1859, when it was formed by taking pieces out of the three parishes of Chalfont St Peter, Fulmer, Stoke Poges and Upton cum Chalvey to form a new ecclesiastical parish. It is named after the Gerrard family who in the early 17th century owned a manor here. At that time, homes which were not farms, were smallholdings clustered in a hamlet in the south of an elongated parish of Chalfont St Peter. Near its centre is the site of an Iron Age minor hillfort, Bulstrode Park Camp, which is a scheduled ancient monument.[3] Originally named Jarrett's Cross, before the times of the Gerrard family, after a highwayman,[ citation needed ] some areas retain the original name, such as Jarrett's Hill leading up to WEC International off the A40 west of the town.

On 1 January 2016, Gerrards Cross officially became a town with the parish council becoming a town council.

Facilities [edit]

The large and distinctive parish church is dedicated to St. James. It was built in 1861 as a memorial to Colonel George Alexander Reid who was MP for Windsor, and designed by Sir William Tite in yellow brick with a Byzantine-style dome, Chinese-looking turrets and an Italianate Campanile. In 1969 the singer Lulu married Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees in the church. The actress Margaret Rutherford is buried with her husband Stringer Davis in the St James Church graveyard. The town has its own library, various restaurants, a Tesco superstore and a branch of Waitrose and its own cinema, the Everyman Gerrards Cross.

Independent schools include St Mary's (all girls- through to sixth form) and Thorpe House (all boys). Students of secondary school age attend either one of the local grammar schools, such as Dr Challoner's Grammar School (Boys with co-educational Sixth Form), Dr Challoner's High School (Girls), The Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe (Boys), John Hampden Grammar School (Boys), and Beaconsfield High School (Girls) Chesham Grammar School (Co-ed), and the local Upper School, Chalfonts Community College, which is the catchment school.

On the south side of the town is the Gerrards Cross Memorial Building, on the site of the former vicarage. The building was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and unveiled in 1922 to commemorate the town's losses during the First World War. It is the only example of a Lutyens war memorial designed with a functional purpose.[4]

Transport [edit]

Gerrards Cross station, in 1994. The view NW from the footbridge, towards Princes Risborough

The town has a railway station on the Chiltern Main Line which opened on 2 April 1906. This provides services to London and Birmingham with a commuting time of 18 minutes on the fast train to London Marylebone. A new arch over the section of deep railway cutting to allow Tesco to build a supermarket collapsed on 30 June 2005 at 19:30. Nobody was injured but the line was closed for over six weeks. Compensation by Tesco to Chiltern was reported as £8.5m and the retailer compensated by funding a media campaign to reinstate business immediately lost by the closure. Construction of a correctly constructed arch began in January 2009.[5]

The 11.36am from London Paddington to Gerrards Cross was an official or 'parliamentary train' recognised as an outlandish loss-making service to prevent the link to that terminus being closed or re-allocated. This train now terminates at West Ruislip. In 2011, National Rail was lobbied to phase the service out.[6]

The town lies 8.4 miles (13.5 km) north west of London's Heathrow Airport.

Recent history [edit]

Many houses built during development in the 1950s had defective tiles, leading to the highest court reported judgment Young & Marten Ltd v McManus Childs Ltd,[7] holding that a person who contracts to do work and supply materials implicitly warrants that the materials will be fit for purpose, even if the purchaser specifies the materials to be used.

Living Room Decorating Ideas

iStock

The living room is one of the most important areas in your house for a great hosting experience. It's likely you and your guests will spend countless hours in this room, discussing and entertaining.

Decorating your living room properly will deliver deeply satisfying living for your leisure time. To get there, however, you must pay attention to all of the following areas:

1. the colors that you select

2. material and quality of seats and furniture

3. wall decorations and art

4. lighting and light fixtures

Below we show you some great ideas for decorating your living room.

The Best Colors for Your Living Room

One area that will have a disproportionate impact on the mood of your living room is the color you choose for the walls. While you can install wallpaper to change the look of certain walls, there are areas that wallpaper cannot cover. Getting the wall color right, therefore, gives you the best shot at creating a remarkable effect.

Some of the best color palettes for living rooms include:

1. White - White walls add a touch of class. They are the perfect backdrop for decorating with upscale furniture.

2. Turquoise - This color is great for creating an informal but refined feel. Your kids and family will love the refreshing mood this color creates.

3. Cream - Striking a balance between formal and informal, cream-colored walls create a quiet, soothing effect.

Furniture Choices

With your wall color selection made, you should select furniture that pairs well with the colors you've already chosen. For example, combining white couches with white walls will create resonance in your room design.

Make sure to provide ample seating to avoid crowding. Add multiple sofas, easy chairs and other seats that can accommodate a complete roomful of people, depending on the size of the room.

Furniture like TV stands and tables should generally blend in with the colors of the room and ceiling. There are some natural materials, however, that can work regardless of the colors on the walls. For example, wooden table surfaces look good whether your walls are white, blue or another color.

Lighting Ideas

You can greatly improve the aesthetics of a living room with bright lighting and impressive light fixtures.

To start, you can consider a beautiful chandelier in the center to provide light around the whole room. This central masterpiece ensures adequate lighting throughout the living room while adding an air of elegance.

You can then add to the light sources in the living room with individual lights on tables and around the walls in areas where people will not knock them down.

Carpeting

Consider adding carpeting to your living room to create a comfortable walking area. Carpeting lets you and your guests go barefoot if you choose. The living room almost demands this since you will want to take off your shoes and kick back on occasion. Warm plush carpets provide a good, comfortable surface for this. There are many choices when it comes to carpet size.

If your living room is very large, you can opt for wall-to-wall carpeting. On the other hand, if it's smaller, you can add just an area rug in the place where you will sit. For example, you can have a rug around the sitting and TV area where your kids will play.

The advantage of area rugs over wall to wall carpeting is, mainly, lower costs and ease of replacement. You can completely change the area rug and create a new aesthetic in a fraction of the time it would take to begin installing new wall-to-wall carpeting.

Art Ideas for Your Living Room

Many homeowners like to have some wall art in their living room. If your living room is spacious, it can accommodate a good-sized piece of art mounted alongside one wall. In some instances, you can consider multiple art pieces. Invariably, tasteful art adds to the sophistication of a living room. It adds an interesting item that sparks many conversations from impressed guests.

Selecting art is an opportunity to express your unique personality. If you are fairly conservative, you can select some classical type pieces that portray a quiet life. If you are more adventurous, you can experiment with a post-modern impressionist piece that others might consider risky. It's your space, and so feel free to decorate it to express who you are.

There are many wonderful things about getting older, but going through the aging process also means you might start experiencing bodily fatigue, achy muscles and joint pain more often than you used to. Because of this, you might have difficulty moving and exercising. But you don't have to let that slow you down. It's vital for older adults to get regular physical activity — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity — but what if you want to gently ease into more movement without exacerbating aches and pains?

One way to get started is to practice chair yoga. Chair yoga exercises are a perfect way for you to stretch and get moving, all while you're safely seated in a chair — no need to get down onto the floor. This type of yoga can help loosen your muscles, improve circulation, build strength and even relieve stress. Even better? You can do it any time from the comfort of your own home.

Chair yoga, or sitting yoga, for seniors is a modified version of traditional hatha yoga to help relieve body aches and stay healthy in a safe and accessible way. Hatha yoga is a form of this type of exercise that's more gentle and more slowly paced with a focus on stretching and breathing. It's ideal for anyone who lives with pain that could make more complex yoga poses difficult, such as chronic pain, osteoporosis and multiple sclerosis. Additionally, chair yoga can also be ideal for people who spend long hours sitting in a chair.

Many seniors find their lives become sedentary with each passing year because movement may become more tiring, uncomfortable or painful. Practicing chair yoga regularly can provide a way to prevent or relieve those issues. It's a low-impact way to get the blood in your body flowing and stretch your muscles.

In terms of equipment, all you need for chair yoga is a stable, armless chair. Make sure the chair is resting on a flat, stable surface and that you're wearing comfortable clothes that allow for a generous range of motion. Chair yoga can also be ideal if you're a wheelchair user.

Benefits of Chair Yoga for Seniors

Getting regular exercise can add years to your life and slow the aging process. However, many types of exercise can become more difficult to perform with age. High-impact exercises like weightlifting, running and other types of intense cardio can be particularly hard on your joints and muscles. Chair yoga provides a way to get your body moving without stressing your joints with hard impacts like running does. Practicing chair yoga for 20-30 minutes per session several times a week can provide significant health benefits.

First of all, it can help manage and reduce pain. One recent study from the Journal of American Geriatrics Society found that chair yoga effectively helped relieve pain associated with osteoarthritis. Furthermore, chair yoga involves stretching the neck, upper back, lower back, shoulders, arms, legs, knees and ankles without much impact on the joints. This not only reduces stiffness, tension and pain, but it can also help to improve mobility in the long run.

Another potential benefit is improved flexibility, which can make it easier to perform regular movements as you go about your everyday routine. Being flexible also can improve muscle coordination and posture and lower the risk of future muscle soreness and injuries. Chair yoga helps improve your strength and balance as well, meaning falls become a lot less likely. Having a strong body also increases your ability to withstand injury.

Chair yoga even has benefits for your mental wellbeing. As with traditional yoga, chair yoga involves a lot of deep breathing, which can help clear your mind similarly to meditation. This often results in reduced stress, a better mood, less anxiety and a calmer state of mind.

Try These Great Chair Yoga Routines

There's no need to leave your home, join a gym or go to chair yoga classes at a fitness studio — plenty of outstanding chair yoga routines are available online. Some are written out with pictures, while others are instructional video workouts you can follow along with.

If you're unsure about the idea of following along with a chair yoga video, you can simply make your own routine consisting of exercises sitting in a chair. Here are some great options for all skill levels:

The Forward Bend Pose involves bending over so your chest is resting on your thighs and your hands are reaching towards the floor. If you can, place your palms fully on the floor. To get the most out of this stretch, hold for 30 seconds or more, taking slow, long, deep breaths.

The Chair Pigeon Pose is another great chair yoga stretch. Sitting up straight with your knees aligned above your ankles, bring your left ankle to your right thigh. If you can, try bending forward as low as possible to make the stretch more intense. Hold here for several deep breaths before doing the same pose with the opposite leg.

For the Chair Spinal Twist, begin by sitting sideways on your chair facing right. Twist your torso to the right while grabbing the back of the chair with both hands to anchor yourself in that position. Stay here for several deep breaths. Then, switch to the left side.

The simple Overhead Stretch starts with you sitting up straight in your chair, facing forward with your arms relaxed and hanging by your sides. As you take a deep breath in, slowly begin to raise your arms up towards the ceiling. Once they're fully extended upward, take a moment to engage your core and ensure your back is straight. Hold this position for a few seconds. Let out a long exhale while slowly lowering your arms back down. Repeat this a few more times.

You might find it easier and more convenient to follow an exercise video routine that provides instructions and demonstrates the different positions for you. There are plenty of free chair yoga classes and routines for seniors to choose from. Here are some that come highly recommended:
